Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is an evidence-based three-tiered framework to improve and integrate all data systems and practices affecting students every day in the school setting.
PBIS is used in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) to describe methods used to identify and support desired behaviors in the school setting. PBIS seeks to reduce or eliminate poor behavior schoolwide through the encouragement of positive behaviors.
The goal of PBIS is to create a positive school climate in which students learn and grow. A number of factors influence school climate including, but not limited to, neighborhood culture, instructional methods, student diversity, school administration, faculty belief systems, and even the school building and location itself.
